Danville, Virginia
ZoneCo led the City of Danville, Virginia through a comprehensive update of its zoning code to implement PLAN Danville, the city’s 2024 comprehensive plan. Known as ReCode Danville, the project modernized a zoning ordinance that had not been comprehensively revised since 2004, aligning local regulations with the city’s current land use goals, development priorities, and long-term vision.
The update focused on making the code clearer, more usable, and more responsive to contemporary development needs. ZoneCo helped Danville simplify and reorganize regulations, consolidate standards, streamline procedures, and introduce graphics and tables to improve day-to-day administration. The project also addressed mixed-use development, university-related land uses, design standards, and the calibration of dimensional and development standards across zoning districts.
A central goal of the rewrite was to balance neighborhood preservation with areas identified for growth and change. The resulting code update gives Danville a more accessible, modern, and future-ready regulatory framework that supports housing, economic development, environmental resilience, and predictable implementation of the city’s comprehensive plan.
